SAN DIEGO – 2014-01-12 — A pileup that killed three people and injured five others Friday night was caused by a 25-year-old San Diego man who was driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said.
William Cady was arrested at a hospital on suspicion of drunken driving, the CHP said.
The four-vehicle collision occurred on the Interstate 805 north transition ramp to westbound state Route 52 about 11:15 p.m., when a Cadillac Escalade carrying six people went off the road, up a dirt embankment and rolled over multiple times, according to the CHP.
The Escalade, after colliding with a pillar, then rolled back onto the traffic lane and was struck by an Acura. Another vehicle then hit the Acura.
That car traveled down a dirt embankment and across both the two westbound and two eastbound lanes of Route 52. It ended up in a ditch off the eastbound side of the freeway.
A Honda Civic also was struck.
Four of the five Escalade passengers not wearing seat belts were ejected. Two of them, San Diego men, 23 and 29, were killed instantly, along with a 35-year-old Ridgecrest man who was wearing a seat belt.
