Colorado: Cyclist Tom Flanagan killed by DUI driver Zachary Scott Strnad; booked in Jefferson jail for DUI homicide

Colorado State Patrol charged Zachary Scott Strnad with multiple counts of DUI homicide, according to booking records in the Jefferson County jail. Strnad is charged with mowing down cyclist Tom Flanagan in a head-on crash as the DUI driver passed two vehicles over a double yellow line.

From the Flanagan family: On August 21, 2015 the world lost an amazing father, husband, and friend. Tom was doing one of the things he was most passionate about, road biking Lookout Mountain Road, when he was hit by a drunk driver.  He leaves behind his wife, Carrie, and his 7 year old son, Owen.

Tom had an amazing zeal for life. He had unbounded love for his family,  a true passion for the outdoors, and an unrivaled enthusiasm for any festive event that Colorado had to offer.

GOLDEN, Colo. — A cyclist died after being struck head-on in a crash on Lookout Mountain where alcohol was suspected as a factor Friday night, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Tom Flanagan, 38, was riding westbound on Lookout Mountain Road on Friday night when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle about 6:10 p.m.

He was taken to St. Anthony Hospital where he died, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Officials said the driver of a 2004 Dodge Stratus went over the double yellow lines and passed two cars in the eastbound lanes, striking Flanagan, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The driver, 20-year-old Zachary Strnad of Aurora was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. The Colorado State Patrol said speed and alcohol are being considered as factors in the crash. ….MORE
