Chavira, 57, pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter today for the 2014 killing of retired Stockton police Officer Jimmy Pendergrass.

The man convicted of a hit-and-run that killed a retired Stockton police investigator received a maximum sentence of four years Wednesday.

STOCKTON — A man charged in the death of long-time Stockton police officer Jimmy Pendergrass has pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
Sergio Chavira, 57, was arrested in December after street surveillance captured his minivan striking Pendergrass, as the 45-year veteran officer crossed East Washington Street in a South El Dorado Street crosswalk on his way to police headquarters.
Pendergrass, whose son, Sgt. Brian Pendergrass, also works for Stockton police, retired from his full-time position in 2000. His years of service included 24 years as a hit-and-run investigator.
Pendergrass, 70, was working part-time as a background investigator for the department at the time he was killed the morning of Dec. 23.
