For the year 2015, there were 1,064 DUI arrests compared with 1,158 in 2014, a decrease of 8.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There were 318 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant who were involved in traffic accidents in 2015 compared with 304 in 2014, an increase [correction] of 4.6 percent.

There were 79 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant who were under the age of 21 in 2015 compared with 68 in 2014, an increase of 16.2 percent.

There were 1,541 major accidents in 2015 compared with 1,530 in 2014, an increase of 0.7 percent.

There were 15 fatalities on Hawaii Island (three of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 19 fatalities in 2015 compared with 11 fatal crashes resulting in 11 fatalities in 2014. This represents an increase of 36.4 percent for fatal crashes and 72.7 percent for fatalities.

Impairment was a factor in 13 fatalities in 2015. Of those, one involved alcohol, seven involved drugs and five involved both drugs and alcohol.

Six fatalities in 2014 were related to drugs only (3), alcohol only (0), or a combination of both (3), compared with 14 fatalities in 2013 related to drugs only (6), alcohol only (2), or a combination of both (6).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.

Anarchists drive without tags, permits or insurance

HONOLULU, HAWAII – 01/06/2016 — Hawaiʻi Island police arrested two men Saturday, January 2, 2o16, in conjunction with the “Freedom Ride” rally that was held at the King Kamehameha Statue on Saturday morning.

The rally supported what organizers claimed was the constitutional “right to travel” with no driver’s license, registration, license plates, safety stickers and motor vehicle insurance.

Three vehicles left the King Kamehameha Statue area and proceeded into downtown Hilo with cardboard type plates saying “Not For Hire.” Patrol officers stopped the three vehicles on Punahoa Street for obstruction of license plates.

Rodney E. Piedvache, 72, of Nāʻālehu, was arrested and charged with refusing to show identification, driving while license suspended/revoked and no motor vehicle insurance. He was released after $1,025 bail was posted. He also received traffic citations for various infractions.

A second man was arrested and charged with refusing to show identification, no operator’s license and no motor vehicle insurance. He refused to identify himself and is being held at the Hilo police cellblock with no bail. Traffic infraction cases were also initiated against him.

Both men’s vehicles were towed under Hawaiʻi County Code section 24-12 duty of police to enforce traffic laws, which is known as “Aliyah’s Law.”

A third man, 39-year-old Joseph B. Pierce, who has no permanent address, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for yelling in the street while officers were conducting the traffic stops.

A fourth man was cited for obstruction of license plates and allowed to leave after removing the paper plates and then providing his driver’s license, registration and insurance for his vehicle.

Drunk Driver Injures Trooper After Being Involved in A Hit and Run Crash

NORTH EAST, MD.  –  When the operator of a vehicle is so impaired as to run into as to run into a stopped cop, then perhaps, just maybe, the driver was drunk. With Maryland’s feckless legislators too timid to put teeth into impaired driving laws, Marylanders will continue to be maimed and killed by DUI drivers. This is the latest story from the deadly highways of Maryland.

A Maryland state trooper is recovering from injuries sustained after his marked patrol car was struck by a vehicle operated by an impaired driver, previously involved in a hit and run crash, just before midnight yesterday.

The trooper is identified as Trooper Charles Tittle, 22, a four-year veteran assigned to patrol duties at the North East Barrack. Trooper Tittle was on a traffic stop inside his marked patrol car with his emergency equipment activated, on westbound Old Philadelphia Road, east of Butterfield Lane.

The driver who struck Trooper Tittle’s vehicle is identified as Sean Jester, 30, of the 100 block of Cool Spring Road in North East. Jester was charged with driving under the influence, negligent driving, reckless driving, failure to drive slow while passing a stopped emergency vehicle, along with other charges. Jester was driving a white Nissan Pathfinder.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 10:30 p.m. yesterday, Jester veered into Trooper Tittle’s patrol car from behind. Upon further investigation, troopers on the scene discovered Jester was involved in a hit and run crash, moments before striking Trooper Tittle’s car. The crash prior took place approximately five miles away at East Cecil Avenue at Mauldin Avenue, North East, in which Jester struck a parked car causing it to overturn. Officers from the Town of North East Police Department are investigating the hit and run crash.

Trooper Tittle was transported by ambulance to Union Hospital for treatment. Trooper Tittle has been released and is on medical leave.

Trooper Struck While Assisting Disabled Motorist On I-95

(Elkridge, MD) December 31, 2015 — A Maryland State Trooper sustains injuries after his patrol car was rear ended by a passing motorist while assisting a disabled motorist this afternoon.

The trooper is identified as Trooper Tristen Phillip, 27, assigned to patrol duties at the Waterloo Barrack.  He has been a member of the Maryland State Police for two years.  Trooper Phillip was inside his marked patrol car on the right shoulder of southbound I-95 assisting a family with their disabled vehicle.

The driver who struck Trooper Phillip’s vehicle is identified as Rodney Irons Jr., 31, of the 10,000 block of Inwood Avenue in Silver Spring. Irons was driving a black Dodge Stratus. Upon further investigation, troopers on the scene discovered Irons was driving without a driver’s license. Irons was transported by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital. Charges are pending.

The passengers in the disabled vehicle are identified as Ellen Pell, 72, the driver and Melvin Pell, 73, the front seat passenger. Mr. and Mrs. Pell, of Wilmington Delaware were the only the occupants in the disabled vehicle and refused medical treatment on scene.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is conducting the investigation on this incident. The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 1:30 p.m. today, Trooper Phillip was dispatched to assist a disabled motorist on the right shoulder of southbound I-95, north of Route 100 in Howard County.

Trooper Phillip was operating a marked State Police patrol car and was parked on the shoulder with his emergency lights activated. He was on the scene for approximately an hour before Irons veered off I-95, onto the right shoulder, striking Trooper Phillip’s patrol car from behind. A chain reaction occurred resulting in the trooper’s patrol car striking the disabled vehicle.

Trooper Phillip was transported by ambulance to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment. Irons was taken to Howard County General Hospital by ambulance.

Troopers from the Waterloo Barrack responded to the scene. State Highway Administration was on scene assisting with lane closures. The Maryland State Police Crash Team investigation is continuing. Charges have not been filed at this time.

Bond was set at $750,000 Thursday for a Palatine woman who authorities say had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in her blood when she was involved in a fatal car crash in South Barrington.

Amber Honaker, 24, was charged with aggravated DUI involving a death and aggravated DUI involving great bodily harm. If convicted of the most serious charge, she faces up to 14 years in prison.

Theresa Miceli, 85, died Dec. 9 after the crash five days earlier left her with a broken right hip and three fractures to her right leg, as well as injuries to her left leg. The crash was at about 8 p.m. Dec. 4 near Mundhank and Higgins roads, said Cook County assistant state’s attorney Maureen McGee.

Theresa and her husband Joseph Miceli, 84, were driving north on Mundhank Road when Honaker, who was driving south, crashed into the couple’s car, McGee said. Onboard monitors indicated Joseph Miceli was driving 24 mph while Honaker was driving between 40 and 43 mph in a 40 mph zone, McGee said. Honaker’s monitor indicated the car did not brake, she said.

Joseph Miceli was admitted to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, where he remains while undergoing inpatient rehabilitation, McGee said. .…MORE

01/12/2016 — According to the Connecticut State Police, on March 28, 2015, troopers from Troop A-Southbury and the New Fairfield Resident Trooper’s Office responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on Rte. 37/Pine Hill Rd.

The operators of both vehicles were transported to the hospital with injuries. A short time later Jody A. Stracci, 55, of the Bronx, N.Y., died as a result of the injuries.

Through the course of the investigation, troopers determined that the vehicle driven by Robert Martini was traveling on Rte. 37 when it veered off the right shoulder struck a rock, moved back onto the travel portion of the roadway, then crossed the double yellow line colliding with the second vehicle.

As the investigation continued troopers applied for and were granted, an Arrest Warrant for Robert Martini, by the superior court.

On January 11, 2016, Robert Martini was taken into custody on the active warrant. Martini was processed and released on a $25,000.00 surety bond.

HOLLO ENTERS GUILTY PLEA TO KILLING DOCTOR WHILE DRIVING DRUNK

A Columbia Falls man who allegedly killed a Nebraska man in a drunken head-on collision in Columbia Falls last

01/12/2016 — A Columbia Falls man who allegedly killed a Nebraska man in a drunken head-on collision in Columbia Falls last summer, has agreed to a plea bargain, according to Flathead County court documents.

Matthew Michael Hollo, 23, signed a plea agreement in December which could give him 10 years in prison in exchange for a guilty plea to a charge of vehicular homicide while under the influence.

Under the agreement with the Flathead County Attorney’s office, Hollo would get 30 years in the Montana State Prison with 20 years suspended with no parole restrictions. Hollo will also be responsible for any fines associated with the felony if he is found by the court to be able to pay. The charge comes with a maximum fine of $50,000.

Hollo will also be able to argue for a lesser sentence. But the court isn’t bound by the plea agreement and would be able to impose a stricter sentence.

The plea agreement also waives Hollo’s rights to testify, call witnesses and be tried by jury.

On June 6, Montana Highway Trooper Thomas Manz arrived at mile marker two on the North Fork Road over the viaduct in Columbia Falls. He found a head-on collision that had occurred at 3 p.m. had killed the northbound driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Timothy R. Fangman, 68, of Omaha, Nebraska was declared dead at the scene. Fangman was a noted cardiologist.

Hollo was the other driver in a Dodge Ram pickup. He was treated for minor injuries at the scene. …MORE

I recently received an e-mail from Ann Reins Fangman (SMC ’68) in regard to the tragic death of her wonderful husband Tim in a vehicle accident on June 6, 2015.  I knew Tim from freshman year forward as he was on my wing of the third floor of Keenan.  He grew up in Omaha and graduated from Creighton Prep.   After Tim’s ND graduation he got his medical degree from Creighton and later spent a year or so at the Mayo Clinic before returning to his hometown of Omaha to practice cardiology.  (Tim’s dad is still living and is a well-known Omaha physician.)

Tim was the only occupant in his SUV and was wearing his seat belt when his SUV (heading north above Columbia Falls, Montana to a cabin – near Glacier National Park) was hit head on by a truck that crossed over and struck the SUV on a viaduct. Alcohol and speed were factors in the accident. The other driver has been charged with motor vehicular homicide and is awaiting trial.

I last saw Tim and Ann after our 10^th Year ND Reunion as I drove over to Omaha.  Tim and I traded a few e-mails during the last year or so.  I’ve circulated the news of Tim’s death to fellow Keenan and other ND classmates who knew him.  And my three-year ND roommate Tom Culcasi said his wife Judy (SMC ’68) would notify her SMC friends.  Gene “Skip” Schraeder replied that he could remember tiptoeing as his room in Keenan was close to Tim’s;  Skip didn’t want to jostle the needle while Tim’s stereo (once again) was playing Beach Boys recordings.   (I can’t think of a nicer way to disturb whatever peace existed in Keenan!)

Many really-nice comments in regard to Tim’s diligence and interest in his patients can be seen if you Google the obituary, etc. from the Omaha newspaper.  Tim was predeceased by his mother Jeanne and two granddaughters.  Along with Ann and Tim’s father, Tim is survived by a son, three daughters, 10 grandchildren, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Injuries and deaths resulting from people operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs are one of the most preventable tragedies in our society today.

This is unacceptable. Although drinking and driving is a societal problem, law enforcement agencies are often the last line of defense when it comes to preventing the worst from happening. We, however, cannot do it alone. It is not possible to catch every driver under the influence who may be on the road at any given moment. The Montana Legislature has toughened DUI laws over the years, which has helped to reduce the number of first-time and repeat offenders. Cultural awareness of the problem has also helped. Organizations such the Flathead County DUI Task Force, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Flathead CARE and STOP Underage Drinking in the Flathead; have helped to spread the word about lives ended too soon due to someone’s decision to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office works with students in schools to understand the consequences of making bad decisions, including drinking and driving.

The enforcement of DUI laws is, of course, imperative and it is a responsibility that our agency takes very seriously. The deputies are dedicatedto the enforcement of these laws, and unfortunately, they stay very busy.

In 2011, 874 people were arrested for driving under the influence in Flathead County.

01/12/2016 — A Los Banos teenager was jailed Wednesday after investigators said she was swerving her vehicle “on purpose” while high on marijuana when the car overturned and her passenger was ejected and killed.

The victim, Brannae Martin, 21, of Dos Palos, was ejected from a 1996 Geo Tracker and died. The driver, 19-year-old Olivia J. Hawkins-Kepney of Los Banos, was arrested, Officer Lance Velez said.

PANAMA CITY – 01/13/2016 — A local man involved in a fatal drunken crash with a parked motorcyclist has laid himself at the mercy of the court, according to court records.

Brent Alexander Taylor, 20, entered a plea of no contest Jan. 7 to DUI manslaughter in connection with the December 2014 death of 33-year-old James E. Thorndyke, who was killed while taking a break from riding his motorcycle along State 77.

The court accepted the plea as authorities perform an investigation in preparation for Taylor’s sentence hearing. However, the sentence will not come as a result of negotiations with the prosecution, but rather solely at the discretion of the judge in the case, court records indicated.

Several friends of Thorndyke, also known as “Bizkit,” have filed correspondence with Judge Brantley Clark Jr., calling for the maximum penalty. One went as far as to say that Taylor “deserves no mercy.”

Prosecutor Bob Sombathy said Taylor entered his plea directly with the court after the State Attorney’s Office did not budge on punishment negotiations. Sombathy said he did not offer Taylor a plea agreement because of the strength of the evidence against him in the case and the desire of Thorndyke’s family to pursue the maximum penalty.

Taylor could face between 10 and 15 years in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 4.

James Edward “BIZKIT” Thorndyke, age 33, was taken from this earthly stop and rests in the arms of our loving Lord Jesus. James was killed on Sunday morning while standing beside one of his favorite enjoyments, his 2008 Harley-Davidson Road King. To all who knew “Bizkit”, his quick wit, willingness to help a friend or stranger in need and his love of his family and friends will be deeply missed. James was born December 6, 1981 in Hampton, VA to Kenneth and Judy Batte Thorndyke. At three months of age he traveled to Budapest, Hungary with his parents and sister. He was always “brother” to his sister and kids in the neighborhood. As a child, he traveled and lived in Europe, Mississippi, and finally called Florida home. He was a graduate of the first class of Arnold High school in 2001, and originally attended Bay High School (sometimes known as Cornfed in school). He went on to work with the City of Panama City Beach, as a Class C Waste Water operator (or as he would say “a hockeyologist”). He celebrated his 33rd birthday on Saturday night with a bonfire and PLENTY of FRIENDS. His time was spent on the creek with friends, riding his motorcycle, taking his nephew fishing and talking with him were all so very important to him. He was also an active member of Shaddai Temple, and Pythagoras Lodge, and attended other Masonic Lodges in the area. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Earl and Iris Thorndyke his maternal grandparents Otho and Barbra Batte, his father’s foster parents Charles and Nancy Brown and nephew Matthew Croyl. Jonathan Gibson, 27, was taken into custody off Airport Road, and though he denies hitting the bicyclist, police said the pickup he was driving is the same as the one described in the incident and has front-end damage.

Police said the victim, identified as Kevin Meck, 50, was riding his bike on the shoulder in the 2400 block of westbound State Road 44 around 7:30 p.m., when he was hit from behind by a dark colored Chevy pickup that briefly stopped, then fled.

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Charges in the death are pending.

SOUDERTON MAN CHARGED WITH HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE WHILE DUI IN DEC. 27 FATAL CRASH

NORRISTOWN, Pa.–Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Horsham Township Police Chief William Daly announce the filing of charges against Corey Adam Mitchell, 26, of Souderton on the charges of Homicide by Vehicle while Driving Under the Influence and related offenses for causing the death of his friend Erik Detweiler, 25. The victim was living in California and was visiting his family at their home in Quakertown.

The charges stem from a two-vehicle accident that occurred Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015. Officers from the Horsham Township Police Department responded at 2:12 a.m. to the intersection of County Line Road and Easton Road for a two-vehicle accident involving a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon, driven by the defendant with Detweiler in the passenger seat, and a tractor-trailer.

The crash investigation, conducted by the Horsham Township Police and the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, found that the defendant was driving northbound on Easton Road and entered into the left-turn lane with the intention of turning left onto County Line Road. The defendant proceeded into the intersection at an angle, going through a red traffic light and directly into the path of the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer struck the passenger side of the defendant’s vehicle, killing Detweiler.

The investigation revealed the defendant was driving with his vehicle headlights off and drove through a red traffic signal when turning left onto County Line Road. Additionally, an analysis of the defendant’s blood found a blood alcohol concentration of .154% and the presence of marijuana.

The defendant is expected to turn himself in early next week and will be arraigned. The case falls under the jurisdiction of Magisterial District Judge Harry J. Nesbitt. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled at the time of the arraignment.

The case will be prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Sophia Polites.

Erik Detweiler, 25, of South Lake Tahoe, CA, formerly of Quakertown, died Sun. Dec. 27 of injuries he received in a crash caused by a DUI driver. Born in Abington, he was the son of Royden Detweiler of Quakertown and Mary Ellen (Kasmer) of Red Hill. He was a 2008 graduate of Quakertown High School and received his bachelor degree in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. Erik was currently working in food service as a waiter/bartender. He was quite the adventurer and lived to ski. He also enjoyed rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, hang gliding, and travel.

Surviving with his parents are a sister, Dr. Keri Detweiler-Mayers, husband Daniel; step-mother Kelly Detweiler; Aunt Sue Killeen, husband Uncle Dennis; maternal grandmother Helen Kasmer; and numerous aunts, uncles, & cousins; and his beloved dog, Luna.

A sharing of memories in celebration of Erik’s life will be held 2 PM Wed., Dec. 30 in the Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral & Cremation Service, 135 W. Pumping Station Rd., Quakertown. A 28-year-old Wesley Chapel man was arrested today, charged with drunken driving in a March wreck that claimed the life of a 50-year-old motorcyclist in Pasco County.

Charged was Tyler Alan Jones, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers who said the two-vehicle wreck killed Dean Alan Crislip of Wesley Chapel.

Dean Crislip was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on Saturday night, March 21st. He was a big man with a big heart and an even bigger laugh. It was distinctive. It was infectious. He loved to let it out at the end of every sarcastic comment he could make.

He was very outgoing and never met a stranger. He was incredibly welcoming and made everyone feel like they were a part of any group. That gruff exterior was countered by a big softie on the inside.

Dean played softball with the Suncoast Softball League for the better part of the last 14 years. He spent much of his time on the HoHo’s (now MetroChefs) and his current team, Woofpack.

His partner, Aaron Davis, also plays in the SSL for the Renegades. Faced with the loss of his partner, Aaron is going to be dealing with costs associated with his tragedy.

Hopefully, we can come together as a family, the Suncoast Softball League and help defray some of the expenses.

Even if you are not a member of the SSL, we ask that you contribute anything you can so we can make this burden on Aaron as minimal as possible.

01/15/2016 — A Casselberry man now faces DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges after a crash that killed one person and injured another on Dec. 12, according to his arrest affidavit.

Matthew Mercado, 22, was arrested Thursday at Florida Highway Patrol headquarters, said Sgt. Kim Montes, an FHP spokeswoman.

Mercado, who also received a citation for failing to stop at a red light, had a blood alcohol level of 0.182 during the time of the crash, Montes said.

The crash, at Semoran Boulevard and Colonial Drive, killed Casselberry resident Omar Diaz, 37, and injured Amalia Gomez, 46.

Gomez told troopers she was driving a 2012 Honda south on Semoran Boulevard, with Diaz in the passenger’s seat, and had the green light to drive across East Colonial Drive.

Mercado was speeding on East Colonial Drive and hit the driver’s side of her car, records show.

01/16/2016 — A college student was drunk by twice the legal limit and speeding when he plowed into an Uber driver, killing a passenger in a fiery wreck in Southwest Miami-Dade, prosecutors said Thursday.

Alexander Chica, 21, also admitted to police he downed drinks at the Sidebar lounge in the Brickell district not long before the Dec. 27 crash, a prosecutor told a judge.

“He had drank two rum and cokes and also a beer ,” Miami-Dade Assistant State Attorney Denise Georges said at Chica’s first court appearance on Thursday.

The judge agreed to allow Chica – a former Belen Jesuit High football player who is studying at Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio – to be released from jail after posting $30,000 bond. He must wear an electronic ankle monitor.

Twenty-one-year-old Alexander Chica was taken into custody Thursday morning and charged with DUI Manslaughter. He appeared in bond court following his arrest. However, his case was reset for 1:30 p.m.

According to investigators, Chica was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his car into an Uber vehicle. The deadly accident happened just two days after Christmas, near Southwest 144th Street and 157th Avenue.

01/17/2016 — Agua Dulce resident Michael Palazzola, 24, was driving the Fiesta “at an unsafe speed” when the vehicle struck a raised concrete curb and careened off the roadway, the CHP report said.

The Fiesta “collided with a large boulder, overturned and struck a tree then came to rest on its wheels,” the report continues.

Killed in the crash was Steven Kirk, 22, said Lt. David Smith with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

The CHP report said Kirk also resided in Agua Dulce.

Palazzola sustained minor injuries while the other two passengers in the Fiesta — identified in the CHP report as Stevenson Ranch resident Nicole Nogosek, 21, and Saugus resident Chandler Richter, 21 — sustained major injuries.

Palazzola was arrested following the crash.

Steven Kirk, 22, has been identified as the man who was killed in the early morning crash, said Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner’s Office.

According to his Facebook page, Kirk hailed from Agua Dulce and graduated from Vasquez High School. He identified himself as a professional off-road motorcycle racer and a welder at KR Fabrication in Lancaster. He was studying metal fabrication at College of the Canyons.

Saturday’s crash occurred at approximately 2:18 a.m. when a blue sedan with four passengers went off the road near Pico Canyon Road and Stevenson Ranch Parkway.

One man was arrested, and the incident is still under investigation, according to Sgt. Matt Chin of California Highway Patrol.

01/17/2016 — On Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 12:31 AM, officers from the Palm Desert Police Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic collision located at Highway 111 and Barbara Drive, Palm Desert. The driver of the vehicle, Jose Luis Munoz-Magana, age 29, residing in Cathedral City, failed to maintain a straight course of travel and collided into the north curb on Highway 111, as his vehicle was traveling west. The investigation revealed Munoz-Magana was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Munoz-Magana was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was booked into the county jail in Indio after being medically cleared from a local hospital.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department encourages the motoring public to not operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

On Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at 10:55 PM, officers from the Palm Desert Police Department responded to a report of a single vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Country Club Drive and Washington Street, Palm Desert. The driver of the vehicle, Melissa Alexandra Perez, 18, from Indio, collided with a metal traffic control light pole located on the northwest corner of the intersection. The investigation revealed Perez was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of prescription medication. Perez was arrested for driving under the influence of prescription medication and was booked into the county jail in Indio after being medically cleared from a local hospital.

On Wednesday, January 13, 2016, about 6:15 PM, officers from the Palm Desert Police Department responded to a report of a traffic collision near the intersection of Hovely Ln. E. and Warner Trail in the city of Palm Desert. The investigation the revealed a gray BMW was traveling eastbound on Hovely Ln. E. when the vehicle collided with another

vehicle that had been preparing to turn south onto Warner Trail. During the investigation, deputies suspected the driver, Stephen Armstrong, 46 of La Quinta, was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Armstrong was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. Stephen Armstrong was arrested for DUI and booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio.

On January 7, 2016, at 4:56 A.M., officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department responded to Old Lake Drive and Pigeon Pass Road, in the city of Moreno Valley, regarding a report of a person laying on the edge of the roadway.

Officers arrived within minutes and discovered an adult male who was incoherent and appeared to have major injuries.  The victim was transported to an area hospital due to the extent of his injuries.  Officers were unable to determine how the male was injured.

Craig Fulgenzi 23 DUI hit and run Moreno Valley Police 010716

Several hours later, Craig Fulgenzi, age 23, went to the Moreno Valley Police Department and told officers that he hit a pedestrian earlier in the day with his vehicle.  Members of the Moreno Valley Police Department’s Traffic Team conducted an investigation. The investigation determined Fulgenzi struck the victim with his vehicle then fled the scene without rendering aid.  Officers also determined Fulgenzi was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Fulgenzi was arrested and later booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for suspicion of driving under the influence, and hit and run causing bodily injury.

On Tuesday, January 05, 2016, at about 03:00 AM, officers of the Rancho Mirage Police Department responded to a report of a two-vehicle traffic collision in the area of Highway 111 and Frank Sinatra Dr., Rancho Mirage.

This investigation revealed that Sarah Marruffo, age 21 of Cathedral City, caused this collision while driving under the influence of alcohol.  Marruffo was arrested and booked at the county jail in Indio.  No injuries were sustained by any party involved.

Francisco Damasio DUI arrest at 2 45 am on 010316 by Rancho Mirage Police

On Sunday, January 3, 2016, at about 02:45 AM, officers of the Rancho Mirage Police Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic collision in the area of Bob Hope Dr. and Ramon Rd., Rancho Mirage.

This investigation revealed that Francisco Damasio, 24 of Silver City, New Mexico, lost control of his vehicle while traveling northbound on Bob Hope Dr., approaching Ramon Rd. and collided with the center median and a traffic control sign. Alcohol was determined to have been a factor in this collision. Damasio was subsequently arrested and booked at the county jail in Indio.

DUI Checkpoint Nets 5 Arrests

Lake Elsinore, CA – The Lake Elsinore Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on January 2, 2016, on Railroad Canyon Road and Church Road between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries.  A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

Launched last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at each bar to celebrate their life saving role.  They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other users are saying via its social tab. Also through the app, for those who want to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb – all from one screen.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

On Friday, January 1, 2016, officers from the Palm Desert Police Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle traffic collision on Clavel Court and Deep Canyon Road, Palm Desert. The driver of the vehicle, Javier Mateo Chacon, 52, residing in Pico Rivera, collided into a nearby residence on Clavel Court. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. The investigation revealed Chacon was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Chacon was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol after he was treated and released from a local hospital. Chacon was booked into the county jail in Indio for this incident.

The vehicle was located in Indio and the driver was taken into custody. The driver was identified as Hillary Semeit, age 35 of Indio. The victims were treated for minor injuries at an area hospital. Semeit was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, injury hit and run and child endangerment. Semeit was booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio.

ALLEGED DIRTBAG OF THE YEAR FOR 2015!

SAG HARBOR, N.Y. — In what could be one of the most flagrant cases of callous disregard for life exhibited by an alleged Dirtbag DUI killer, a New York City real estate executive facing vehicular homicide and DUI charges in a fatal crash on Long Island, attempted to flee to South America from Puerto Rico, authorities said Wednesday.

Bill Clifford, a spokesman for the Suffolk County district attorney, said Sean Ludwick was caught by federal authorities after he was in Puerto Rico trying to buy a large boat that would take him to South America.U.S. citizens do not require a passport to travel to and from Puerto Rico.

After his capture in Puerto Rico, Ludwick was brought back to Long Island and ordered held without bail. His attorney declined to comment.

The New York Post reported:  “A part-time sailing instructor in San Juan, who either works or worked for the FBI, ratted out Ludwick upon learning of the vehicular-homicide charges pending against him for the Aug. 30 death of Paul Hansen, according to a source briefed on the case.”

“He picked up a weird vibe off him and did a background check and notified the [Suffolk] DA’s Office,” the source said.

Hansen’s widow, Catherine, posted an angry message on Facebook after learning of Ludwick’s bust, saying: “You can run but you will be caught. A–hole.” ….MORE

Paul Hansen was dumped dead and lifeless in his driveway by Ludwick say cops

On Jan. 4, 2016, Suffolk County District Attorney John Spota announced that Ludwick had pleaded not guilty to a 13 count indictment charging him with aggravated vehicular homicide and other crimes at his arraignment. Officials said that Ludwick’s blood had a blood-alcohol content of .18 percent four hours after the crash that killed his passenger, Paul Hanson, 53, of Sag Harbor, on Aug. 30, 2015.

In a ghoulish touch to the horrific crime, investigators alleged that Ludwick hauled the dead and lifeless body of his buddy out of the wreck and drove away from the scene.  The incredible Ludwick, according to District Attorney Spota, dumped the body at the end of Hansen’s driveway on Rolling Hill Court East in Sag Harbor.

The mangled Porsche managed to drive on the rims of the vehicle for about a quarter-mile from the scene of the crash where Southampton Police found Ludwick standing by the wreckage.

At that point, the Southampton officers placed Ludwick under arrest.

Spota said in a statement that Ludwick had been freed on a million-dollar bond, which will now be forfeited.

Under New York State law, Ludwick faces a sentence of eight to twenty-five years in prison which up to seven more years for hit and run – all of which will be in an up-state prison.
