North Las Vegas, Nevada – 12/23/2015 – A 35-year-old man is arrested after hitting and killing a man in North Las Vegas.

On Saturday, December 19, 2015 at about 9:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard North and Hamilton Street in reference to a crash involving a 24-year-old man on a moped.  Medical personnel arrived and pronounced the man dead on scene.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, a Martin County man was arrested after driving through the Palm City traffic homicide scene at excessive speeds, then ramming the patrol SUV of a Martin County Sheriff’s Watch Commander.

25-year old Johnathan Eckerd has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Vehicle on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, after he recklessly sped through the traffic homicide scene on Martin Downs Boulevard, where troopers were investigating the fatal crash from earlier tonight. Eckerd was driving so recklessly, he nearly hit the investigators on the scene.

Investigators say the truck Eckerd was driving blew past them at an extremely high rate of speed, jumped the curb, and went around an MCSO traffic deputy, who was also working the crash scene. Eckerd then took off southbound on Florida’s Turnpike.

A Martin County Sheriff’s traffic unit, along with Watch Commander Lt. Bill Dowdy, followed Eckerd and attempted to slow him down, but Eckerd rammed Lt. Dowdy’s SUV twice. Dowdy was eventually able to stop the truck, and Eckerd was arrested. Lt. Dowdy was not injured.

Troopers checked the 2008 Saab’s speed over 100 MPH and attempted to stop the vehicle. The Saab, operated by Anthony Joseph YATTAW, age 26, of Happy Valley , stopped on the 302 off-ramp briefly before taking off, injuring a Trooper and accelerating at a high rate of speed towards Baker City.

Street racing kills 3 innocent people on Christmas Eve DUI investigated photo by IFD

Street racing kills 3 innocent people on Christmas Eve DUI investigated photo by IFD

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 24, 2015) –Metro Police say illegal street racing may be the cause of a terrible crash that left three people dead.

A 12-year-old girl was among those killed.

The crash happened just before midnight Wednesday on South East Street near Interstate 465.

Police say a Ford Mustang is believed to have caused the crash.

Witnesses say the driver of the Mustang and the driver of a Corvette were at a stoplight, revving their engines.

When the light changed, the two cars took off like they were racing.

Witnesses said the Mustang started to fishtail, hit the median and flipped into the oncoming lanes, striking a Chevrolet Trailblazer.

All three people in the Trailblazer were killed, including a 12-year-old  girl, who died on the way to Riley Hospital for Children.

The driver of the Mustang and three passengers were taken to the hospital in good condition.

Cindy Tunnell’s 20-year-old daughter and 10-year-old granddaughter were two of those passengers. Tunnell said her daughter graduated high school with the Mustang’s driver, identified as Connor Tomlinson, and they had been downtown to see the Circle of Lights.

“My daughter just wanted my granddaughter to see the Christmas lights,” Tunnell said.

Tunnell said her granddaughter was the only person in the car who remembered the crash.

“She just said that the driver started going really fast and he was racing a car that was beside them,” Tunnell said.

Investigators say the Mustang’s speedometer was stuck on 60 miles per hour.  The speed limit at that location is 40 mph.

Mike Duckworth witnessed the crash. He was at a bar across the street and said it’s common to hear people racing on that stretch of road.

“(It) sounded almost like a plane wreck. … This is a residential area and it doesn’t need to be going on in this area,” Duckworth said.

It’s also an area where car enthusiasts often meet. One of them, Hatem Zahran, organized a candlelight vigil at the crash site Thursday night.

“It’s pretty sad. … I feel horrible for the family,” Zahran said.

Zahran planned to organize a fundraiser to help pay for funeral expenses, even though he did not know the victims. He said that he was working to get the car community involved. Zahran also said Tomlinson was known in that community and often frequented the area.

Tunnell believed her daughter and granddaughter were simply bystanders who were caught up in the crash. She said they are still coming to terms with what happened.

“I am deeply sorry. … Nobody can bring (the victims) back but my heart goes out to each and every one of them,” Tunnell said.

Tunnell also had a message for the community after the tragic crash.

“Slow down, people. I mean there (were) three innocent peoples’ live ….MORE

Judge Michael Maceroni rejected Assistant Macomb Prosecutor William Cataldo’s request that Dennis be held without bond. Maceroni allowed him to be released on a $500,000 personal bond, adding the bond may be reviewed as Dennis further recuperates.

“These are horrible charges, with tragic consequences,” Maceroni said from the bench, but added: “There doesn’t appear to be a risk of flight, not at this juncture anyway.”

An 18-year-old Chicago driver has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence in the fatal Dec. 6 accident that killed two passengers after their stolen vehicle crashed into a tree south of downtown Highland Park.

The driver, Leonard A. Lemons, appeared in court Dec. 7 on two counts of reckless homicide; two counts of aggravated driving under the influence in an accident causing death, and one count of unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. Bail was set at $1 million.

Lemons, of the 5300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Dec 30 in Lake County Circuit Court in Waukegan.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling southbound on First Street as First turns into Oakwood Avenue at about 4:30 a.m.. The vehicle left the road in the 1600 block of Oakwood Avenue and crashed into a tree south of Walnut Street. A resident called 911 to report the accident.

One of the passengers, 16-year-old Joseph Belcher, of an unknown address in Chicago, was pronounced dead of multiple traumatic injuries at the scene at 4:45 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the Lake County Coroner’s office. Another male passenger was transported to Evanston Hospital and pronounced dead.

“We are very confident the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed based on the amount of damage,” said Deputy Police Chief Timothy Wilinski. Wilinski denied a report that police were pursuing the vehicle when it crashed.

Police said the vehicle had been reported stolen to Chicago police two days earlier.

From Highland Park Police:
On December 6, 2015 at approximately 4:30 a.m., Highland Park Police and Fire personnel responded to a traffic crash involving a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed that collided with a tree near the intersection Oakwood Avenue and Walnut Street. One occupant was critically injured and pronounced deceased at the scene. A second occupant was transported to Evanston Hospital where they were pronounced deceased. The identity of both occupants has not been determined at this time. Investigators are working with the Lake County Coroner and Cook County Medical Examiner to identify the deceased and notify next of kin.

In response to this traffic crash, the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) responded immediately to thoroughly document the scene. The MCAT is a multi-jurisdictional entity that is comprised of traffic accident investigators. Investigating officials processed the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the collision. Additionally, investigators have determined that the vehicle involved in the accident was reported stolen to the Chicago Police Department on December 4, 2015.

This crash is being investigated by the Highland Park Police Accident Investigation Team with the assistance of the MCAT. Further information will be provided when available.

Re: People v. Rebecca Cristal Sandoval

SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA –01/01/2016 —  Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced on Dec. 30, 2015, that Rebecca Cristal Sandoval pled guilty to Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated in the death of Linda Jeanne Wall, of Buellton. She also pled guilty to driving while under the influence of a drug causing injury to another and admitted the special allegation of personally inflicting great bodily injury to another. Additionally, she plead guilty to driving while under the influence of a drug from a separate incident.

On December 19, 2013, Mrs. Wall was waiting behind a vehicle being driven by Simona Mikusova, who was stopped at a red light. Sandoval, while driving under the influence of Nitrous Oxide, failed to stop and collided with Mrs. Wall’s vehicle. The result was Mrs. Wall’s vehicle made contact with the vehicle driven by Ms. Mikusova. Mrs. Wall then suffered fatal injuries while Ms. Mikusova and her passenger were also injured.

In a separate incident, on July 11, 2013, while Sandoval was driving under the influence of Nitrous Oxide and Lorazepam, she collided with two parked vehicles.

Santa Barbara County Calif District Attorney Joyce Dudley

Santa Barbara County Calif District Attorney Joyce Dudley

In response to these criminal acts, District Attorney Dudley stated, “This case is yet another heartbreaking reminder that driving under the influence of any intoxicant, including legal drugs and prescription medications, can have fatal consequences and destroy many lives. Mrs. Wall’s death has continued to have a devastating effect on her adoring family, friends, and our community. ”

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the California Highway Patrol for their hard work and thorough investigation in both cases.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 20, 2016 before the Honorable Judge Gustavo Lavayen, who is expected to sentence Sandoval to nearly 14 years in prison.
