Shawn Hemingway hit and run felony DUI and spat in Reno cops face Washoe County Nev. 072316

RENO, NEVADA. — It’s going to be a nasty time in the slammer for Shawn Hemingway after he was found guilty of felony DUI. No meth, no booze, no crack and lots of other nasty dudes around ready to smack him just because. It didn’t have to be that way. But Hemingway made his choices in life.

The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office obtained a guilty verdict against a Reno man charged with felony DUI after a two-day trial in District Court. The defendant in the case had two previous convictions for felony DUI in Washoe County and California and was found to be under the influence of Methamphetamine in this most recent case.

Shawn Hemingway, 48 (DOB 4/3/67) from Reno was found guilty yesterday evening of one count of Driving Under the Influence of a Prohibited Substance in Washoe County District Court.  Trial for the case began Monday morning and concluded with the jury deliberating less than two hours Tuesday evening before finding Hemingway guilty of the charge.

When Hemingway was contacted by police he immediately became combative and at one point spit in the face of one of the officers. Hemingway was subsequently arrested for DUI and the District Attorney’s Office filed charges against him for that offense.

The case against Hemingway began on June 10, 2013, when Reno Police Department patrol officers responded to a call of a possible hit and run. Once on scene, the officers learned that REMSA paramedics had been called earlier in response to a report of a man who was unconscious in his vehicle.

When paramedics arrived, they found the man unresponsive in the driver’s side of his vehicle, which was stopped at a traffic light at the Longley and S. McCarran intersection. The paramedics were able to wake the man, who responded by driving his vehicle into a car directly in front of him.  Following this, the man got out of the vehicle and fled to a nearby bar.  The Reno patrol officers were able to identify the man as Hemingway and located him a short time later.

When Hemingway was contacted by police he immediately became combative and at one point spit in the face of one of the officers. Hemingway was subsequently arrested for DUI and the District Attorney’s Office filed charges against him for that offense.

During trial, the prosecution introduced evidence that when Hemingway was first located by REMSA paramedics, his car was parked in a traffic turn lane on Longley Lane that led onto S. McCarran Boulevard.  In addition, when Hemingway fled to a nearby bar, he went inside and asked for a drink.  The bartender refused and Hemingway fled again and was seen discarding a top shirt in an apparent attempt to change his appearance and avoid being caught by police. Toxicology tests of Hemingway’s blood determined he was under the influence of methamphetamine and also detected cocaine metabolite.

Hemingway was sentenced on May 10, 2016, and faces 2 to 15 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $5,000.

Mynews4 reported that Hemingway had two previous convictions for felony DUI in Washoe County and California.

Daniel Laurance Lordobit-lord.dan

Daniel Laurance Lord, 67, of Cortez, died July 10.

Lord was born May 15, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved to Florida in his early 20s and instantly transformed into a true Floridian.

His love for food propelled him to become a fixture on the island restaurant scene. He also had a passion for music, often jumping on stage with the local bands to play harmonics — he rarely left home without them.

Possibly his greatest attribute was his gift of gab. He made friends with everyone he met. He will be missed by all, but his stories will carry on forever.

A celebration of life was to be held after press time 6-8 p.m.Monday, July 18, at O’Shucks Raw Bar & Grill, 12012 Cortez Road, Cortez.

Mr. Lord is survived by son Simon; daughter-in-law Dana; grandchildren Cameron and Grant; brother Chris; sister-in-law Mary; nieces Amber, Ivy, Megan and Courtney; and nephew Thomas – Obituary in the Islander.org.

Man Killed While Crossing Highway 22 – Polk County

On November 3, 201,6 at about 7:55 PM, Oregon State Police Troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Highway 22W (near Frontage Road, just west of West Salem).

Preliminary investigation revealed a 50-year-old male was crossing Highway 22 (from the south to north) when he was struck by a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz sedan traveling westbound on Highway 22. The driver of this vehicle told troopers she attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to do so. After this impact, the pedestrian was struck by a second westbound vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Corolla.

This area of Highway 22 is not lit by street lights and there is no designated crosswalk. The pedestrian was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing. Alcohol consumption and improper position upon the highway are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash.

OSP was assisted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation. Next of kin has not yet been made on the deceased. This is an active investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.

alexander-dirienzo-age-50-wild-man-attacked-oregon-state-patrol-fish-and-wildlife-trooper-on-dui-stop-102216Oregon State Police report that on October 22, 2016, at about 10:35pm, an OSP Fish and Wildlife Trooper observed a white Chevrolet Blazer driving on Burgess Road which was crossing the center line and speeding.

The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle for suspicion of DUII and several traffic violations. A pursuit ensued and the suspect eventually pulled into the driveway of his residence at 53156 Day Road in LaPine. The driver, later identified as Alexander DIRIENZO, age 50, exited his vehicle and began to walk towards his residence. DIRIENZO failed to follow commands and continued walking towards his residence.

DIRIENZO, who was known by the trooper as a violent individual, challenged him to the ground and that he was under arrest. DIRIENZO ignored these commands and began to walk towards the trooper in an aggressive manner. The trooper deployed his Taser on DIRIENZO twice without success and then used pepper spray on him with little effect.

DIRIENZO continued to punch the trooper in the face while trying to disarm him. The trooper managed to defend himself by punching DIRIENZO back who let go of the trooper’s rifle.

DIRIENZO began to assault the trooper and violently tried to disarm a rifle from the trooper. DIRIENZO continued to punch the trooper in the face while trying to disarm him. The trooper managed to defend himself by punching DIRIENZO back who let go of the trooper’s rifle. DIRIENZO fled into the residence and a short time later a female exited stating he had fled out the back. The trooper received minor injuries as a result of the incident. Since that encounter, law enforcement has been searching for DIRIENZO.

On October 24, 2016, at about 3:20PM, an OSP Patrol Division Trooper stopped a vehicle on Burgess Road near Day Road in LaPine where DIRIENZO was a passenger. DIRIENZO was taken into custody without incident.

He was booked into the Deschutes County Jail on the following charges: Robbery in the First Degree, Assaulting a Public Safety Officer, Attempt to Elude Police Officer — Vehicle and On Foot, Reckless Driving, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Resisting Arrest, Interfering With a Police Officer, Unlawful Use Of a Weapon, Theft in the First Degree and Escape in the Second Degree.

According to an FHP report, Schwarz was seen speeding and driving his 2005 Mercury Sable “in an extremely reckless manner” south along S.R. A1A just prior to the crash. Witnesses told troopers he drove off the roadway onto the grassy median and ventured across the center line on the highway, forcing other drivers off the road. He swerved into the northbound lanes while attempting to pass DiMattia’s 2008 Infiniti about three-quarters of a mile north of Driftway Terrace and slammed into Kathleen Boos’ 2010 Ford Focus, the report states.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police took Cleveland Antwan Coleman, 31, of Savannah, into custody Tuesday night after his release from Memorial University Medical Center.

Coleman is facing charges in South Carolina related to the fatal collision that occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 20 on US-17 near the Georgia-South Carolina state line.

Don was riding in the backseat of a 2009 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Erich Richter of Register, GA. Carlina Richter, also of Register, was in the front passenger seat and Joshua Bridges, of Savannah, was beside Don in the backseat. Erich, Carlina and Joshua were all taken by EMS to Memorial University Medical Center. Cleaveland was taken to Memorial in a private vehicle.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officials say Coleman is facing one count of felony driving under the influence involving death, and two counts of felony driving under the influence with great bodily injury.

An extradition hearing was scheduled for Coleman Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in Chatham County Superior Court.

Coleman was given the option of waiving an extradition hearing, granting his extradition to South Carolina and into the custody of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, or to request a hearing in front of a Superior Court judge.

Coleman exercised his right to a hearing on Wednesday morning.

Judge Abbot started off by saying, “Mr. Coleman, can you hear me? Can you understand me?”

Judge Abbot proceeded by saying, “You were brought over from the jail today to come before a superior court judge so you can have you extradition rights explained to you. Extradition is the process in by which a person is located in one state has charges pending in another state. And you will end up having to make one of two choices this morning. The charges are in the state of South Carolina and the charge is felony driving under the influence, great bodily harm results, that is all the information I have about these charges because I don’t know that I have a copy of the warrants.”     MORE

SPECIAL FROM THE HOWARD COUNTY POLICE:

11/23/2016  – After a series of unfolding events over the last two months, the Howard County Police Department has been notified of a grand jury indictment that was served yesterday on an Ellicott City woman charged with vehicular manslaughter in the death of a pedestrian. Separate indictments served earlier this month also charged the woman and her boyfriend with a series of drug charges.

The case began Sept. 24 when Brittany R. McElhiney, 28, of Hobsons Choice Lane, was driving on Green Clover Drive around 10:32 a.m. According to witnesses, McElhiney was driving on the wrong side of the road and was involved in a collision with another car. Her vehicle continued to travel to the side of the roadway, striking a pedestrian. The pedestrian, Robert Dukehart, 78, of Ellicott City, was transported by ambulance to Shock Trauma for his injuries. No one else was injured.

Police began an investigation and determined that McElhiney was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident. Drugs were also located in her car.

police discovered more than 9 pounds of marijuana, 3.5 ounces of LSD, three vials of PCP, heroin, concentrated THC and 48 pieces of THC packaged as candy, scales, packaging materials, and nearly $500 in cash. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be over $20,000.

The investigation into McElhiney’s drug use ultimately led to a search warrant at her home Oct. 6, where she resides with a boyfriend, Richard Debois, 64. At the residence, police discovered more than 9 pounds of marijuana, 3.5 ounces of LSD, three vials of PCP, heroin, concentrated THC and 48 pieces of THC packaged as candy, scales, packaging materials, and nearly $500 in cash. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be over $20,000. Both McElhiney and Debois were arrested for drug-related charges. McElhiney was released on $50,000 bond and Debois was released on $85,000 bond.

About a month into the ongoing investigation, on Oct. 20, police were notified by Shock Trauma that the pedestrian victim from the collision, Robert Dukehart, had died as a result of his injuries.

Investigators recently went before a grand jury to present all of the details of the cases. McElhiney and Dubois were both indicted on numerous drug-related offenses, including manufacturing and distribution. Yesterday, an additional indictment was served on McElhiney with charges for vehicular manslaughter and driving while impaired by drugs in the death of Robert Dukehart.

Both McElhiney and Debois remain free on bond.

During the evening of November 15, 2015, Trooper Jaimie Jursevics stopped her patrol vehicle on the inside shoulder of I-25 south of Castle Rock in an effort to protect the scene of a previous crash being investigated by a fellow Trooper. At approximately 2045 hours, Trooper Jursevics was notified of a possible drunk driver headed southbound on I-25. Trooper Jursevics made contact with the reporting party and learned the suspect vehicle was approaching her location. Trooper Jursevics immediately began attempts to flag down the suspect vehicle from outside her patrol car. Moments later, the reported drunk driver collided with Trooper Jursevics, killing her instantly. The suspect vehicle fled the scene but was apprehended by the Palmer Lake Police Department approximately 15 miles from the crash scene. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, driving under the influence and several other offenses.

Jursevics entered the Patrol January 9, 2011.

Trooper Jursevics was 33 years old. She is survived by her husband and an 8-month-old daughter.

Eric Peter Henderson, a retired Army colonel with a long history of service, is accused of drunk driving resulting in her death.

Jursevics was investigating a minor crash with another trooper near Plum Creek Parkway just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday when she was informed by dispatchers about a possible drunk driver, which was reported by another driver coming southbound on Interstate 25.

After getting the assignment from dispatchers, she called the driver who made the original report. According to an affidavit about Henderson’s arrest, that caller told the trooper he could see the lights on her vehicle. They were just seconds away.

“(The caller) could see the female trooper shining a flashlight toward the ground in the number one lane of the highway,” the affidavit states. “It appeared that Trooper Jursevics was attempting to direct the (possible DUI) vehicle to the side of the highway.”

However, the vehicle Henderson was allegedly driving did not stop or pull over. The witness reported seeing the trooper’s flashlight fly through the air when she was struck.

Still on the phone with Jursevics, the caller heard her scream as she was hit by the oncoming car.

Jursevics was lying in the middle of the road, face-down and bleeding, when the other trooper arrived. Emergency medical personnel arrived, but there was nothing they could do and she was pronounced dead there on the highway.

According to the Maryland State Police: at 11:34 p.m. on November 21, 2016, the Maryland State Police Forestville Barrack received a 911 call regarding a traffic crash on southbound Rt. 4, north of Dower House Road, near Upper Marlboro.  The first arriving trooper found two vehicles were involved in a crash at a traffic light.

The investigation indicated a 2008 Ford Explorer had run into the rear of a 2007 Mercedes S550.  The Mercedes had been stopped at the traffic light.

The occupants of the Mercedes were the driver, Matthew Collins, 47, of Upper Marlboro, and his passenger, Teresa Collins, 52, of the same address.  Both were transported by ambulance to Prince George’s Hospital for treatment of injuries.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was not at the immediate scene when troopers arrived.  A medic gave a description of a man walking from the scene to one of the first arriving troopers.  The trooper spotted that individual about 70 yards away walking in the center median, before crossing the northbound lanes and walking along the shoulder.  When the trooper first saw him, the person was walking back toward the scene of the crash.

Trooper N Murray contacted the man and identified him as the driver of the Ford Explorer.  He was identified as Prince Georges County Councilman Jamel Ramon “Mel”. Franklin, 40, of Upper Marlboro.  The Ford Explorer was registered to Prince George’s County.

Trooper N Murray contacted the man and identified him as the driver of the Ford Explorer.  He was identified as Prince Georges County Councilman Jamel Ramon “Mel” Franklin, 40, of Upper Marlboro.  The Ford Explorer was registered to Prince George’s County.

Upon contacting Franklin, the trooper noted signs of possible impairment.  A further investigation led to Franklin’s arrest for driving under the influence.  He was transported to the State Police Forestville Barrack where he was subsequently charged on traffic citations with driving under the influence, driving while impaired, negligent driving, and failure to control speed to avoid a collision.  He was later released to a sober driver.  State Police will be consulting with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding possible additional charges.

On Dec. 16, 2008, Franklin was charged with driving on a suspended license in Baltimore County Md by Baltimore County Police Officer Robert Smith On April 6, 2009, Franklin entered a guilty plea an was given Probation before Judgment.

Chelse Renee Dorman, 33, of Chipley, was sentenced Friday to 13.5 years in prison followed by five years of probation. She was arrested in April after veering into oncoming traffic on State 77 and crashing head-on with another vehicle, killing the driver and seriously injuring his passenger. Dorman’s blood-alcohol content at the time of the crash was 0.269, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08, lab results later showed.

Dorman pleaded no contest in November to DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury and was sentenced Friday. She also will never hold a license again after serving out her sentence.

The charges arose from a crash shortly after midnight April 8 on State 77 just north of Woodland Road in the Sand Hills community. Cory Harrison, 26, of Panama City, was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger, 22-year-old Chelsea Jordan, was rushed to the hospital afterward with serious injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported Dorman was driving northbound in the inside lane of State 77 in a 2016 Chevy Silverado moments before the crash. Harrison was traveling southbound in the inside travel lane in a 2000 Chevy truck. Dorman crossed into the oncoming traffic lane and crashed head-on into Harrison.   MORE

DA VANCE: SHAUN MARTIN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS-TO-LIFE IN PRISON FOR DEADLY 2013 EAST VILLAGE CRASH

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr., on Nov. 4, 2016, announced the sentencing of SHAUN MARTIN, 35, to 20 years-to-life in state prison for crashing into an East Village grocery store with his car while under the influence of drugs, killing 62-year-old Mohammed Akkas Ali and seriously injuring two others. On July 20, 2016, MARTIN was convicted following a bench trial in New York State Supreme Court of all of the charges against him, including Murder in the Second Degree, Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, and Assault and Reckless Endangerment in the First Degrees, among other charges.

“Shaun Martin’s drug-fueled joy ride ended in tragedy as he swerved across Second Avenue, hopped the curb, and smacked into an East Village grocery store,” said District Attorney Vance. “Thanks to my Office’s prosecutors and members of the NYPD’s 9th Precinct, he will serve a prison sentence commensurate with his deadly conduct. Now, we must ensure that the murder of Mohammed Akkas Ali – and the injuries suffered by his co-workers and bystanders – will not be in vain. My Office will continue working to reduce traffic fatalities by holding criminal drivers accountable for the harm that they inflict.”

MARTIN sped through the East Village in a white Nissan Altima, driving more than 50 miles per hour, while impaired by both phencyclidine, commonly referred to as PCP, and methamphetamine.

As proven at trial, at approximately 6:50 a.m. on June 19, 2013, MARTIN sped through the East Village in a white Nissan Altima, driving more than 50 miles per hour, while impaired by both phencyclidine, commonly referred to as PCP, and methamphetamine. Cutting across three lanes of traffic, MARTIN drove onto the sidewalk and struck a fire hydrant, a pay phone, a muni-meter, and a tree, before crashing the car into a flower stand attached to the East Village Farm and Grocery Store on the corner of East 4th Street and Second Avenue. MARTIN struck three of the store’s employees, including Mohammed Akkas Ali, who died as a result of injuries he suffered from the crash. In addition to the store’s employees, a man riding a bicycle was also injured by debris from the crash.

Last month, in a separate, unrelated case, DANNY LIN was sentenced to state prison for fatally striking a 57-year-old man with his car on the Lower East Side.

Two Maryland State Troopers Struck By DUI Driver In Charles Co. – 37 Troopers Struck This Year While Stopped

(WALDORF, MD) – Two Maryland state troopers at the scene of a traffic crash in Charles County were struck by an impaired driver passing the scene, bringing to 37 the number of troopers hit while on traffic stops, crash scenes, or in construction zones this year.

The driver is identified as Ruth A. Runyan, 75, of La Plata, Md.  She was charged with driving under the influence, driving while impaired, negligent driving, failure to change lanes for an emergency vehicle, and failure to obey designated lane directions.  An ambulance was called to the scene to evaluate her for any injuries, but she refused treatment.

The troopers are identified as Trooper First Class Thomas Davis and Trooper Matthew Milich, both of whom are assigned to the La Plata Barrack.  Neither trooper was injured in the crash.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m. yesterday, both troopers were on the scene of a traffic crash on northbound Rt. 301, south of Smallwood Drive.  The troopers had their marked patrol cars parked behind each other in the slow lane of Rt. 301, protecting the crash scene ahead of them.  Both patrol cars had their emergency lights activated and traffic was being diverted to the lanes on the left of the scene.

Both troopers were seated in the same patrol car when a 2007 Mazda MX-5 northbound on Rt. 301 struck the unoccupied patrol car and then spun into the patrol car ahead of it, where the two troopers were seated.  The first patrol car struck sustained disabling damage and the second sustained superficial damage.

The driver of the Mazda was identified as Runyan.  Troopers detected signs of possible impairment and conducted an investigation.  Their investigation led them to arrest Runyan for driving while impaired.

A tow truck was called to transport the Mazda from the scene.  When the tow truck arrived, troopers and deputies detected signs of that driver’s possible impairment.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the tow truck driver by deputies from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to 37 state troopers being struck while on the side of Maryland roads this year, another 20 State Police patrol cars have been hit, fortunately, while the trooper was outside the vehicle.  There is a clear purpose behind Maryland’s move over law.  The purpose is to save the lives of our police officers, our emergency services workers, and our tow service operators.

The move over law requires drivers approaching from the rear an emergency vehicle or tow service vehicle using visual signals while stopped on a highway to, if possible, make a lane change into an available lane not immediately adjacent to the emergency or tow vehicle.  This movement should only be done if another lane in the same direction is available and the move can be made safely and without impeding other traffic.

If moving to another lane away from the stopped emergency vehicle is not possible, the law requires drivers to slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing weather, road, and vehicular or pedestrian traffic conditions.

Violating the move over law can result in a fine of $110 and one point.  If the violation contributes to a traffic crash, the fine is $150 and three points.  If the violation contributes to a traffic crash resulting in death or serious injury, the fine is $750 and three points, in addition to the devastating personal tragedies a crash like that will cause.

Washington: State Patrol Arrested Stephen T. Brant for DUI drugs After Multiple Vehicle Hit and Run on I-5

King County:  The Washington State Patrol reports that at approximately 4:52 pm on December 7, 2016, the Washington State Patrol received reports that a vehicle traveling NB I-5 north of Michigan St. was driving erratically and striking other vehicles.  The vehicle then exited to Columbian way after which it turned around and proceeded the wrong way down the ramp from the West Seattle Freeway to Columbian Way.  While traveling the wrong way, the vehicle struck two more vehicles after which the driver fled the scene on foot. At this point the vehicle has struck at least 6 vehicles.

Numerous calls from citizens provided a great description and possible sightings of where the suspect may be running.  The suspect then entered a business on Airport Way and locked the door at which time the employee of the business told him to leave.  The suspect left and sat near the front of the business behaving erratically.

Police say that the suspect then entered traffic on Airport Way and jumped on top of a vehicle and as the vehicle pulled to the side, the suspect slid off, breaking the side mirror.  The suspect then forcibly opened the door of another vehicle and struggled with the driver.  The driver took his keys and was assisted by another citizen to remove the suspect from the vehicle.

At approximately 5:23pm, the Seattle Police Department advised that they believed they had the suspect from the Hit and Run detained at Airport Way and Horton Ave and requested the WSP to contact.  Trooper Scott Madden arrived at 5:32pm and took the suspect into custody, advising that he matched the description of the driver of the Hit and Run vehicle.

At 6:50pm the suspect was transported to Harborview Medical Center followed by Trooper Madden.  Through observations, admissions and other factors the suspect was placed into custody for DUI-Drugs.  The suspect was identified as Stephen T. Brant of Greenbank, Washington.  It was also determined that Brant was arrested and booked into the Island County Jail shortly after midnight on December 6, 2016.

Trooper Madden applied for and obtained a search warrant for blood from Brant and blood was taken into evidence for testing.  Brant was booked into the King County Jail at approximately 1:42 am on multiple charges after being medically cleared by Harborview.
